Magnesium is probably one of the most important minerals that the body needs. Magnesium plays an important role in relaying signals between your brain and body.

Magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate diverse biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation.

Magnesium is required for energy production, oxidative phosphorylation, and glycolysis. Health problems associated with magnesium loss include diabetes, poor absorption, chronic diarrhea, celiac disease and hungry bone syndrome. One of the first signs of magnesium deficiency is often fatigue.

You may notice muscle spasms, weakness or stiffness as well. Loss of appetite and nausea are other common symptoms in the early stages. However, you may not notice any symptoms at all in the beginning. Low magnesium levels have been linked to many negative health outcomes, including weakness, depression, high blood pressure and heart disease.
